A few years ago, I was in Toronto, taking a break from my work there, and spending time in a city park. As I was walking, I looked up in a tree and saw a black squirrel.
I live in Nashville. Squirrels in this area are brown. I didn't know black squirrels existed.
Thinking this was some kind of genetic fluke, I immediately took out my phone to take some photos. I also stopped people who were passing by and quietly said, "It's a black squirrel!"
Nobody cared. When I got back to the office and told everybody, I found out why...
Black squirrels are common in Ontario.
Every musician has a version of the black squirrel. Locally, nobody cares, but if you take it somewhere where it hasn't been experienced before, people will stop in their tracks.
Your job is to find it.
How do you do this? Remember, you're looking for something that you're probably taking for granted, so the best way is to let other people do the discovery for you. The more people you come in contact with, especially people that aren't local or similar to you, the more likely you are to find it.
Good luck!
